Construction of the magnificent temple began around 1121 CE and continued until approximately 1160 CE. It was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana, a prominent ruler of the Hoysala Empire, and remains the largest surviving Hoysala structure in Halebidu, which was the powerful former capital of the empire.
A key architectural feature is its unique twin-shrine design (Dvikuta), dedicated to Hoysaleshwara and Shantaleshwara (named after the King and his queen, Shantala Devi). The temple rests upon a massive star-shaped platform (jagati), a signature characteristic of Hoysala temples.
The most famous feature is the continuous series of outer friezes which depict elephants, lions, horses and mythological tales that wrap around the walls in horizontal bands. These detailed panels narrate mythological tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana.
